GreenBuild LLC was founded in 2004 by John Carroll after years of working in all facets of the construction and housing industry. GreenBuild's mission is to provide excellent customer service and ensure client satisfaction by realizing the full design intention of each project. We seek to do this by enhancing project quality and value by recommending building technologies that will reduce environmental impacts and operating expenses during the construction and life of the project. We strive to do this in an economically responsible way. We see ourselves as stewards of sustainable building practices.
Initially trained as an architect, John was uncomfortable delving strictly into the theoretical and chose to pursue a more practical, "hands-on" approach to building. First as a laborer, then a carpenter, eventually practicing both residential and commercial carpentry, John focused on the mechanics of construction and quality. This pursuit of knowledge in building led him to a position with New York City's Department of Housing Preservation and Development. For three years, armed with a notebook, John combed through the city's most dilapidated buildings in some of its most blighted neighborhoods and witnessed - first hand - day after day - the effects of time and neglect on building materials and on the social fabric of the city.
During this time, John studied at night to earn a Master's Degree in Construction Management from Polytechnic University in Brooklyn (Formerly known as Brooklyn Polytech). He was now ready to take on larger projects.
One day after completing his Master's Degree, he began working for Ebasco Constructors, a large general contracting firm that deal primarily in infrastructure projects. While with Ebasco Constructors (eventually bought by Foster Wheeler) John focused primarily on environmental projects. The complex nature of these projects, in a highly regulated atmosphere with multiple client representatives proved and excellent place to learn about information management as well as project management.
During his tenure there John progressed through the ranks. He performed the duties of construction site superintendent, health and safety officer, quality control engineer, and numerous other tasks. The skills learned here would prove invaluable in venturing out on his own. The constant travel, however, began to make him rethink this career choice and he began moving back toward the thing that really interested him... building houses.
In 2000 an opportunity arose that was simply too good for him to pass up. He had an opportunity to help establish a small, high-end, design-oriented commercial furniture manufacturing and installation company in New York. During his time there - during the start of the recession, sales tripled. John was hired as a project manager and was responsible for taking project from the conceptual stage through production and installation. His responsibilities continued to increase and as General Manager he was responsible for growing sales in a contracting economy.
Success was short-lived, however, as the company was taken over and his position of General Manager was taken over by the new parent company. This event, though in one sense unfortunate, would set the stage for the establishment of GreenBuild. John would now be able to combine all his interests: design, quality, construction management and environmental responsibility ... into one great entity. This is GreenBuild. I am proud to share it with you.
Sincerely,
John J. Carroll
Founder and General Manager
